ATA Airlines was an American low-cost scheduled service and charter airline which was based in Indianapolis, Indiana. ATA operated scheduled passenger flights throughout the US mainland and Hawaii, as well as military and commercial charter flights around the world. Established in August 1973 as American Trans Air (ATA) to provide aircraft for the Ambassadair travel club, ATA received its common-air carrier certificate in March 1981 and also started operations as a charter carrier. ATA closed shop in April 2008 after resorting to the option of Chapter 11, in the US Bankruptcy court, Indianapolis, IN. ATA had its headquarters in Indianapolis, IN.
